The Holocaust decimated the Jewish people. What we have left are panels of marble etched with names of communities which no longer exist. It is possible that the typeface used for these memorial plaques has also disappeared to the vaults of history. I imagine a modern hebrew typeface designer gleaning the anatomy of these letterforms, recruiting the relative horizontal and vertical strokes, the negative spaces, the stylistic characteristics of this particular letterform and introducing this as a new digital typeface to be used in a completely different cultural setting. The visual representation of words describing communities now gone is presently an option for a cultural rebirth carrying an unconscious memory into the present moment.
